School and Classroom Policies

Absences and Tardies:

If your child is absent, all school work, homework, tests, and quizzes will be expected to be made up. It is the student's responsibility to find out what they have missed and to make up work. When a student is absent, a "work missed" sheet will be filled out by either a student or myself. If a student fills it out, I will check it before it goes home. This will have all of the work that was done in the day. All missed work must be completed. The absent sheet, along with any sheets I handed out, books, or folders needed may be sent home with a sibling in another grade. (However, this is contingent on if I can find everything.) If your child does not have a sibling in another grade here at LCS, you may either pick it up by 3:00 PM at the classroom, if you email me so I know in advance, otherwise your child can get the work when he/she comes back. Please always check on Edline for any assignments or tests that are upcoming.

Absences and tardies require written excuses for New York State. Those that are not documented are assumed to be illegal absences by the state. I have included an excuse note for your convenience. You may copy this as you need it, or you may write your own note. If you use your own, please include your child's name, the date(s) they were absent, the reason why, and your signature. If you email me to let me know about an early dismissal, please make sure to also send in a note, because we need a hard copy for state records. If your child comes in late, you must sign them in at the office. If a child is late three times without being signed in by a parent, they get a detention. "Late" means not in our classroom by 8:10am.

Legal Absences:
These are absences that are considered legal by the State of New York:

  • sickness
  • sickness or death in the family
  • attendance at health clinics (ie: dr. offices)
  • required to be in court
  • quarantine

All other absences are considered illegal and will be recorded as such.

    Prearranged Absences:

When you know your child will be missing school, please get a green "Prearranged Absence" form from the office or me. You will need to fill it out and submit it to me Mrs. Hills and I can both sign it. This needs to be done at least THREE DAYS before your child will be absent.

    Early Dismissals:

Please let me know if your child will be leaving early. The school office and I need to know when and why for NY State attendance records. I have included an early dismissal note on below for your convenience. You may copy this as you need it, or you may write your own note. If you use your own, please include your child's name, the date and time that they are leaving early, the reason why, and your signature. If you email me to let me know about an early dismissal, please make sure to also send in a note, because we need a hard copy for state records.

Change in Dismissal: You must send in a note (or email me) if there is any change from your child's regular dismissal routine. This is for safety reasons.

    Extra Copies:

When I pass out papers, there are enough copies for every student. If a student needs another copy for some reason, they must pay ten cents per page for another one. (The front of a page is one page. The front and back would be two pages.)

    Emergency Form

Please fill out the LCS Emergency Form and hand it in ASAP. This is very important. This was sent home over the summer, but if you need another one, please contact the school office.

    Health Office

Students will not be allowed to get any medicine from the health office, including over-the-counter medications, without parental and doctor consent. You will need to get a form for this from the health office. Please fill it out and return it to that office. from the nurses to fill out and return. This needs to be kept up-to-date, otherwise your child will not be allowed to attend field trips or participate in recess, gym, or sports.

The nurse will not be giving out cough drops. If you think your child needs them, please send in a note and cough drops and I will allow your child to take some. PLEASE do not send your child to school if they are sick, especially if they have a fever or have been vomiting. When your child is fever-free for 24 hours without medicine, they may then return to school. This applies to vomiting as well: please wait 24 hours from when they last vomited before allowing them to return to school.

    Homework:

Homework assignments for the day will be written on the assignment board in the classroom for the students to copy into their student planners. All homework must be done neatly, on time, and fully completed. Sloppy work will not be accepted. <

Regular homework that is not turned in on time will have 20 points taken off. The work must be handed in the next day. If it is not, it will be a zero. For all major projects and reports, 10 points will be taken off for each day the assignment is late.

There will be one warning for each quarter. The warning means a late assignment will not have points taken off, but it still needs to be done and handed in the next day. I do not give unnecessary homework. Therefore, if it's assigned, there is a reason for it.

    Tests:

You should go over all tests and quizzes with your child. Look at anything they got wrong, even if it's not a low grade.

Any test grade that is below an 80% must be signed by a parent and returned to school the next day. Please do not just sign and return the test. Go over it with your child so you can help them see and understand what they did wrong so they won't do it again on the test (or on other quizzes or tests). Students often make the same mistakes in their work.

    Lunch and Snack

Soda is not allowed during school except on class party days. Students may have a water bottle to keep at their desk throughout the day, as long as it only contains water and can be closed. Please make sure your child has a healthy snack for our snack time (no dessert or candy).

    Chaperones

In order to chaperone field trips, the school needs to clear you as a driver. In order to do this, you must fill out a Volunteer Driver Application Form. You may pick up one from the school office, or get it from the school website. In addition to filling out the form, you must attach a copy of your driver's license and current vehicle insurance card. Please do this as soon as possible, so I don't have to worry about having cleared drivers for field trips. Thanks!
